Review: Trader Joe’s Quarles Harris Ruby Port

QuarlesHarrisRubyPort

When you are looking for cheap port, Trader Joe’s has the Quarles Harris Ruby Port for just $10 to meet your needs! Ruby ports are the lowest end of the port family. They are not aged in barrels, like the more delicious tawny ports. Instead, they’re aged a brief period of time is some big metal vats, blended until acceptable, then sold to the masses.

As ruby ports go, you can do a lot worse than the Quarles Harris Ruby Port. I know many people who are happy with it, despite the poor smell. On the other hand, I expect more from a port, even one that is $10. To me, this port tastes overly alcoholic and harsh, with too much raisin and too little subtlety.

My best advice is to consider this a good option for cooking port, not drinking port. If you’re going to drink it, fine, but you’re better off spending a couple extra bucks and getting something better.
