Francis Coppola Claret (Black Label), from their Diamond Collection, is their self-proclaimed “signature red wine.” Those are strong words from a brand known to have a broad stable of very good red wines. Your first question is probably about the wine itself: what is Claret? It is simply a term for a wine made in the Bordeaux style. In this case, Coppola makes it with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes as the primary ingredient.
In addition to those grapes, they add others including Petite Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This blend produces significant harmony of flavors. Given the heavy Cabernet base, it is a rich, smooth wine with a lot dark berries and plum. It then is balanced with those spicy notes that come through as the taste deepens.
I really enjoyed the Francis Coppola Claret. It is not an every day wine, given both its price and the weight of the wine, but it is a great choice when you are looking for something a little more special to pair with that nice rib eye you plan to throw on the grill.
